The
city of Salem is surrounded by hills, including the Shevaroys and
Yercaud hills. The city is enclosed by an amphitheatre of hills,
the Nagaramalai in the north, the Jeragamalai in the south, the
Kanjanamalai on the west and Godumalai on the east. It is divided
by the Thirumanimuthar in the main division.
Kottai Marriamman Temple and Sugavaneswarar Temple are located in
the heart of the Town. There is a Government Museum in Salem near
to the Collectorate. The fort is the oldest place of the town. Salem
is famous for its juicy and delicious mangoes.

Tharamangalam
is situated 27kms from Salem. The place is famous for Kailasanathar
Temple. It has beautiful statues and stone carvings. Figures of
tortorise , fish , monkey , Crocodile are carved out the walls and
granite roofs. Statues of Rathi - Manmatha , Vali- Sukrive of the
epic Ramayana and Yali with rotating stone ball in its mouth. The
rotating lotus flower in the seiling are some of the beautiful futures,which
adorn the Temple.
There
are numerous Mariamman temples in Salem which draws hundreds of
tourists for its exquisite architecture. Mariamman is a Hindu goddess,
an incarnation of Shakti. Every year around in the month of July
the city celebrates Mariamman festival for a fortnight, this is
considered to be the best time to visit Salem city.
There
are prehistoric Shiva temples at Belur (Thanthondreeshwarar) and
Uttamacholapuram (Karabunathar). The Sugavaneshwarar temple and
Kottai Azhagiri Nadha Perumal Temple are also very significant shrines
of Salem. A branch of the Ramakrishna Math is situated in Salem.
